Making joined up Government a reality
The Government Gateway “hub” is
an important part of delivering joined-up government.
Via the internet it enables citizens and businesses
to communicate and transact securely with many parts
of government from a single point of entry. The Gateway
makes e-government a reality: modernising the way
that we do business with government. It also allows
citizens and businesses to seamlessly interact with
government departments and bodies through a variety
of diverse channels, services and applications software.
This interaction is achieved without having to understand
the internal workings of government.
The Gateway is essentially an authentication
and routing engine based on open standards, allowing
different systems in different government departments
and bodies to communicate with the Gateway and with
each other. The Gateway allows secure authenticated
transactions and joined-up government services to
take place via the web. This means that in the future,
electronic transactions involving many different
departments at once will be possible, ensuring a
truly joined-up electronic public service.
